Under 10’s meet WTA Pro’s at Aviation Club’s Tennis Emirates Clinic

Last week it was the Under 10’s turn to take part in the Tennis Emirates Clinic, organised by Dubai Duty Free and held at the Aviation Club. Some of our players were lucky enough to join over 60 of the best young tennis players from affiliated tennis academies across the UAE. Our Under 10’s players got to show top ATP players Nikoloz Basilashvili and Marton Fuscovics and 3 WTA pro’s just how good they are. The players had a practice session with the budding tennis stars and gave them some invaluable advice and top tips for the future!

Rule of the Week: How to reach and play a short spin ball

If the spin or wind brings the ball back over the net to the side of the player who hit the shot, what should you do? The opponent(s) may then reach over the net and play the ball. They may not touch the net or the opponent’s side of the court. This is the only situation when a player may reach over the net to play a ball. If the opponent does not play the ball and it bounces on the side of the player who hit the spin shot, that player who hit that shot wins the point.

Coach Luis’ Tip of the Week: The importance of routine between points

“One of the key things to prepare before playing the point is how to do it without being nervous or anxious about playing the ball. Most of the professional players have a ritual before the point which is crucial for them in order to get ready for the next ball and focus on their strategy for a better performance on court.

Between-Point Routines

As with pre-match preparation, the 25 seconds you spend between points will often determine how you play during points. So you should use this time to ensure that you are totally ready to play your best tennis. This can be best accomplished by developing an effective between-points routine. An effective way to conduct this is focusing on the 3 R’s:Rest, Refocus, Recharge.

For example, the player plays the point and whether he wins or loses the point, this is how he can mentally and physically prepare for the next point:

Step 1: Turn around from the net and change the hand on the grip that you normally play.

Step 2: Walk into the towel and control your breath; deep and slow breathing, so that your heart rate will reduce and you’ll feel more relaxed and can control your nerves.

Step 3: Get focused and prepare your strategy for the next point.

Step 4: Activate your body through fast and short breaths so that you are alert and ready to play.

It’s fundamental that coaches teach young players to carry out this between-point routine in order to help kids to stay calm and be prepared for the match.  You see lots of young players in matches who feel lost and don’t know how to prepare before playing the ball. A strategy is needed in order to be a better tennis player. Good luck!”
