Rule of the Week

If a player touches the net, distracts his opponent or impedes in anyway, then they automatically lose the point.

Coach Kirk’s Tip of the Week: Staying focused on the point, not the score

“It’s a common feeling for players to go through the experience of being down a set and a couple games in the second set. There are often times when we, as players, feel like we are stuck and can’t turn things around.  So what do we do? We drop our heads and shoulders as if we have already been defeated.

If you are stuck in the same situation, having a negative mind set will only make it worse. So how can we change that? Well, showing your opponent that you have no will or intention to put up a fight in the match gives them more of a reason to up on their confidence. Instead, forget about the score and stay focused on every point with a positive attitude and making your opponent work even harder to earn their points, rather than just giving it away.

Not putting up a fight restricts players from progressing. For example, players will not be able to work out what exactly they need to work on from their mistakes. However, if they try their best and mistakes are made, it makes it easier for them to understand the areas that need to be worked on. What’s more, players may be demotivated and that negative thinking may be repeated in their next match.

There are plenty of instances where a player is able to come back and grab the win in the match after being down in points, games, and sets. The match isn’t over till it’s over.

By remaining positive, no matter what situation you are in, it may result in a good outcome. This helps us improve and enjoy the game even more in the match. So give it a try! Good luck!“
