Tie Break Tens, Coca Cola Arena Friday 22nd October 2021

Our very own Coach Simon Roberts has been selected to participate in Dubai’s inaugural Tie Break Tens. Its new to Dubai, its fast and its exciting! Unlike conventional tennis matches Tie Break Tens matches are comprised solely of tie breaks – no games, no sets, just exhilarating ten-point tie breaks in which every point counts.

If you haven’t already made plans or got your tickets come on down to the Coco Cola Arena and experience this prestigious international tournament. Let’s rally behind Simon as he lets his racket do the talking against the likes of Monfils, Fritz, Brown and Evans. Go ‘The Machine’!

Player interview with our Ladies League player Maria Tronina

1. Who is your favourite professional player?

Alexander Zverev

2. Who is your favourite Rackets Academy Coach?

Moro Bogdan

3. Why do you love tennis?

Tennis is one of those rare sports that requires athleticism (speed, reaction and power) and at the same time strategic thinking. It also tests your mental resilience so you never get bored with tennis. Plus, all the social perks.

4. How did you get into tennis?

My uncle was a big tennis fan so he convinced my Mom to put me into tennis classes at the age of 6.

5. How long have you been playing tennis?

Sadly, I stopped playing tennis after graduation and didn’t play for 17 years. I’m back on court since last year and pleasantly surprised at how much adult tennis play is happening in Dubai.

6. Name 3 things you like about Rackets Academy.

The indoor summer courts, going digital on the app and promoting adult competitions.

With the help of Jordi, I hope to be able to continue improving my follow through, my back hand, my volley, my smash and definitely the service.”

Maria wins a brunch for two at The Void, Studio One Hotel, Dubai. Enjoy Maria and let us know how it was!

Rule of the week

Playing a Tie Break

During a tie break game, points are scored ‘zero’, ‘1’, ‘2’, ‘3’, etc. The first player/team to win seven points wins the ‘game’ and ‘set’, provided there is a margin of two points over the opponent(s). If necessary, the tie break game shall continue until this margin is achieved.

The player whose turn it is to serve shall serve the first point of the tie break game. The following two points shall be served by the opponent(s) (in doubles, the player of the opposing team due to serve next). After this, each player/team shall serve alternately for two consecutive points until the end of the tie-break game (in doubles, the rotation of service within each team shall continue in the same order as during that set)

The player/team whose turn it was to serve first in the tie break game shall be the receiver in the first game of the following set.

Coach Moro’s Tip of the Week

When playing a tie break most players will be more nervous than usual so it’s a good idea to double down on your strengths. To mitigate your nerves, hit your strongest shots. If you have a go-to slice, hit it. If you like your forehand better, make sure you’re hitting a lot of forehands.

Similarly, make your opponent hit their weakest shots. Do this relentlessly. If it’s working don’t change anything. Good luck!
