Rule of the Week: Hitting the ball before the second bounce on your opponent’s side

Volleyers might slice their volley backhand more than usual, in some cases, the ball’s first bounce is on your side. When the second bounce gives the extreme slice in the ball it’s called a screw and can land on the opponent’s side. So how can you hit the ball then…?

You’re allowed to hit the ball before the second bounce. However you’re not allowed to touch the net in tennis. So the only way to hit the ball back once you reach is to lean over the net, hit the ball without any part of you or your clothes or racket touching the net!

Coach Sarah’s Tip of the Week: Try to avoid being tense during a match

“In life, generally people are tense, they tend to stiffen their muscles, whether it’s their hands, arms, shoulders, ..etc. So in tennis, when people get tense during the game, this affects their muscles and its flexibility, including the main trajectory of the swing, resulting in the lack of quality to the stroke.

It’s normal to get worried before a match; it’s a good sign as it means that you care. However, over worrying or being strongly tense would result in a bad outcome. So remember, you can do nothing from worrying too much or being stressed out. Just relax, breathe deeply, get your heart rate down and play your game! Good luck!”
