What’s New?

Our lovely Coach Mariano took part in the Junior Tennis Initiative Workshop this month; a grass roots initiative run by the ITF and offered to only the best academies in the UAE. The workshop, operating in over 100 nations worldwide,  was an introduction to the programme which helps nations establish a 14 and under junior development programme through identifying and preparing a pathway for these talented players. Mariano found the workshop hugely beneficial and his learnings from this will support the Junior Development Programme that has been set up through the Tennis Emirates Federation with the participation and collaboration of the academies affiliated to Tennis Emirates.

Rule of the Week: Sudden Death Point

If the score reaches deuce, in some formats of the game its’s sudden death point. The receiver chooses which side to take the serve on. This also applies in doubles with the receiving pair deciding who receives the serve. However the pair cannot change positions. In mixed doubles the player of the same gender shall receive.

Coach Kris’ Tip of the Week: Keep It Simple

“The more advanced the player, the more complicated our strategy seems to get. Sometimes you have to go backwards to go forwards. Return to the basic techniques that allow you to improve to your current level; watch the ball, move your feet, follow through consistently, use cross court to set up down the line, lots of first serves in play and hit the return of serve early and solid.

These all seem simple, but it is extremely easy to move away from these ideas when you are trying to win a match. Pick one of the techniques mentioned and try to focus on just that. When you feel you are doing it well, move on to another. Don’t be afraid to go backwards to get back on track. Good luck!”
