Congratulations to our Player of the Week, Mary Nash. Mary receives this award for being the most improved player in the ladies doubles league this season! Well done Mary on a great season, you’ve worked so hard!

Rule of the Week: Tie-break Rules
When tennis players win six games each, they generally play a tiebreaker to decide the winner of the set. If you’re playing a tiebreaker, follow these steps:
The player due to serve the 13th game serves the first point into her opponent’s deuce court.
After the first serve, the serve goes over to the other player, who then serves the next two points, serving first into the ad court and then into the deuce court. After the third point, the players alternate, serving two points each — always beginning on the ad court.
After the first six points are played, no matter what the score is, the players change ends (and continue to do so after every other six-point span) until one player wins at least seven points with a margin of two points. The player who serves the last game of the set before the tiebreaker serves the first game of the new set following the tiebreaker.
Coach Jordan’s Tip of the Week: Know when to switch and cover
“This to me is one of the most important tips I can give for doubles. In doubles, one player will cover the advantage side and the other, the deuce side. However, there are occasions where players need to switch sides to cover for the other player. This often happens during poaches, lobs and shots that your partner can’t retrieve.
One hard rule you and your partner can use is this: Once someone firmly crosses the midline (meaning they fully commit to the other side of the court), the other player on the team switches automatically. It can be annoying when you poach and your partner is still standing behind you. This means they haven’t moved one step when they should already be on the other side of the court.
Another situation where you’ll need to switch is on lobs where one player is at the net and the other player is near the baseline. If the net player is lobbed, they should quickly move to the other side of the court. At this point, the other player (near the baseline) will run to their side to retrieve the lob. Good communication is key when you switch, so if you intend to change sides, yell out “switch” so your partner is clear on where to go.
Lastly, if your partner simply cannot get a racket on the ball and you cover their side (if you’re fast enough), they should switch as soon as they see you commit to their side. This situation is not as clear-cut as poaches and lobs, so it may take time to get used to a quick switch in this situation. When you see your partner on your side, don’t wait – just switch quickly!
I need to point out one more piece of advice here. If one of you plays the net and the other back, the person at the net should pick a side. Many people tend to stand near the midline at the net and go side to side during the point. You can’t tell where they are going or where you should cover. If you play the net, always be aware of this. Basically, pick a side unless caught in a dogfight at the net. Good luck!”
Rackets Academy Ladies League, Season 3 – End of season results
Well done to all the ladies on the successful completion of another Ladies Doubles League. Congratulations to Venus Angels who won Division A and to Baseliners who won Division B. Our lovely ladies and coaches enjoyed a fun morning of laughter and awards at The Maine Street Eatery in Studio City last week. Have a great summer ladies and see you all in September!
