Rule of the Week

Usually a player or his/her racket can’t cross over the plane of the net; however, a player can follow through with a swing across the net only when first making contact with the ball on his/her side.A player can also reach over the net to hit the ball if it first bounces on his/her side of the court, but the ball goes back over the net (e.g., due to spin or wind) before the player can hit it.

Coach Kirk’s Tip of the Week: Prepare Early for Groundstrokes

“Very often players enjoy hitting the ball at a very fast pace. If you happen to be one of them you’ll need to keep this in mind. Hitting the ball hard on court is usually a shot that impresses the audience or even yourself while playing. However you’ll need to keep in mind that the ball could come back even faster or just as fast, the opponent can use the pace of your shot to retrieve it. This is where preparation for the next ball is essential. Once you know where the ball is going to bounce, move yourself into a position where you feel most comfortable playing the shot. The higher you make your backswing, the more power you are likely to generate. However the more complex the swing, the more that can go wrong under pressure, so finding the right balance is key. Try using your other hand to support the racket as you take it back, this will ensure that when you follow through, you will be getting good rotation, which can lead to more power in your strokes.…Good luck!“
