Rule of the Week: Foot Fault

During the service motion, the server shall not:

  1. Change position by walking or running, although slight movements of the feet are permitted; or
  2. Touch the baseline or the court with either foot; or
  3. Touch the area outside the imaginary extension of the sideline with either foot; or
  4. Touch the imaginary extension of the centre mark with either foot

If the server breaks this rule, it is a “Foot Fault”.

Case 1: In a singles match, is the server allowed to serve standing behind the part of the baseline between the singles sideline and the doubles sideline? Decision: No.

Case 2: Is the server allowed to have one or both feet off the ground? Decision: Yes.

Coach Sean’s Tip of the Week: The Slice

“A slice is effective for many reasons. If you’re stretched wide, the slice can be a safe, defensive shot that will get you back in the point. When hit as a rally ball, the backspin slows the pace of the shot and keeps the ball low and out of your opponent’s strike zone. When you’re inside the court, you can be more aggressive with the slice by driving a deep, low, skidding shot that you can follow to the net. It’s also the spin you need to be successful with volleys and drop shots. Good luck!”
