Weekly Newsletter – 13th June 2019

Dear Member,

We hope you enjoyed a relaxing Eid break. Here’s all the news from the last two weeks at Rackets Academy. Find out who our Player of the Week is and how our ladies got on in the last few weeks of the doubles league. We have results from our Green Ball Tournament last weekend and a Tip & Rule of the Week from Coach Luis. And finally, check out ‘What’s New’ at the club… read on!

Player of the Week

Congratulations to our Player of the Week, Meline Siggen. Meline is part of our Elite Performance Programme and receives this award for her improvement over the last term. She has consistently worked hard both in her training sessions and private lessons to increase her performance and, as a result, has made so much progress. Well done Meline; this award is well deserved.

What’s New?

Wondering how to keep your kids entertained over the summer? We have just the answer! We are running an Indoor Summer Camp, 7th July – 29th August at Fitness First in Arabian Ranches 2 and Town Center. Look out for our Summer Camp email coming out soon, but in the meantime email register@racketsacademy.ae to sign up or to find out more. Places are limited.

Rule of the Week: Parents & young players on a tournament; What to do

The parent’s role is to encourage and support their child. A tennis match can be a very stressful situation for a child as they need to play out and finish the match on their own without any help from the outside the court.

The young player is therefore alone on the tennis court and the only way to help them is to encourage them with short words in a positive manner. There are many situations in a tennis match where the player feels frustrated, disappointed and sometimes even angry unless they manage their emotions well.

The role of a parent is to therefore help their child manage their emotions by remaining  positive and encouraging them through their body language and facial expressions to show that you believe in them. The supportive role of the parent starts with the journey to the tournament. The main goal of the parent is to try and make the event a stress-free environment.

During the match the parent should be very aware of their own body language as their child will pick up their emotional state simply by reading their parents body language from afar and knowing exactly what their parents are thinking. The parent should sit or stand in a relaxed and comfortable position and remain calm and always encourage the player, especially when they make mistakes.

Coach Luis’ Tip of the Week: The importance of using sunscreen

“Protect your body and skin from the sun. Living in countries where the weather is very hot and the sun is so strong, you need to make sure that you protect yourself from UV rays by using sunblock, wearing a hat, woven shirts and pants or those with UV protection, and sunglasses that block 99 percent of UV rays.

You should always wear some form of sun protection. You can get sunburnt even on overcast days when there is no sun. Use a sunscreen with 30 SPF as a minimum, to protect your skin. Apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes prior to going out in the sun, so that it is most effective. And make sure to reapply every two hours to maintain the protection. Try to educate your kids to use sunscreen and remember to keep well hydrated too.”
