Introducing Coach Kirk

We are delighted to welcome Coach Kirk to the Rackets Academy team. Born and raised in Dubai, Kirk started his tennis career at the early age of 5. Being ranked no.1 in all the junior categories in the UAE growing up, he began performing and competing in the ITF juniors and reached a career high of 380.

Kirk began coaching 7 years ago alongside his studies. He graduated finishing his Bachelor’s degree in Business and Management from Murdoch University, Dubai. Kirk loves to share his passion and heart for tennis and hopes to bring up young aspiring juniors in the near future.

He joined Rackets Academy in 2019 and has big hopes to create great players and spark interest to those who are new to the sport.

Tennis for All in Uganda

The tennis equipment that our coaches and members kindly donated at the end of last term has arrived at Tennis for All in Uganda. The kids were really grateful for all your donations. No more running on a stone court in Crocs or bare feet! Thank you to all who donated and special thanks to Wendy, Leo and Karl Allcorn for their tremendous efforts to reach out to the community in Uganda.

Rule of the Week:

Did you know that players/teams cannot touch the net or posts or cross onto the opponent’s side during play.

Coach Sean’s Tip of the Week: The Volley

“ These tennis volley tips are important for the development of the forehand and backhand volley. A tennis volley is hit before the ball bounces on the ground. Tennis volley shots are normally hit when the players are at the net or near the net, although it is also possible to hit this shot near the baseline. However, volleying away from the net is seldom used or is only used in certain circumstances.

The main objective of a tennis volley is to surprise your opponent since this shot limits your opponent’s reaction time, thus it is considered as a defensive shot. A tennis volley shot also minimizes the bad bounce effect especially on grass and clay courts. In addition, playing a volley (especially if you stand near the net) gives you a wide array of angled shot choices which can be very difficult for your opponent to return. If your opponent does return the ball, normally it is a weak one.

To be a successful volleyer, you need to have quick reflexes and you need to have perfect hand-eye coordination. Good luck!”
